Just like fashion, furniture and décor are continuously evolving. Many styles were born out of previous trends and now there are several variations of homes from traditional to contemporary and everything in between! So what is your style? Let’s first quickly discuss the differences between the main four design styles; traditional, transitional, modern and contemporary then you can decide!
Traditional Design
Traditional design preserves a visual look that has been established during several design eras. Traditional style is based on classic elements; it remains true in their historical appointments, generally ornate in nature and upholds craftsmanship in décor and accessories. Traditional styles can be manipulated to create a revived product while retaining a visual link to the past.
Transitional Design
Transitional designs are relaxed and a casual living style of today. It is a relatively new furniture classification that was created to blend and balance the differences between modern and traditional furniture. The elements of a transitional style include soft and neutral colours, fabrics, materials, finishes and clean lines that provide a fresh look but yet familiar to past traditional design features. Transitional décor is the perfect intermediate for those who find traditional too stodgy and modern too sleek.
Modern and Contemporary Design
Modern and contemporary styles are the complete opposite of traditional design. The heavy use of wood, rich antiques and mouldings give away to flat planes, clean edges, smooth profiles and minimal accessories. Glass, metal, plastic and other materials are introduced as construction materials that offer unique appearances or manufacturing techniques. The old adage “less is more” aptly applies to modern designs.
However, although these two terms are used interchangeably, there is actually a difference between modern and contemporary. In summary, modern generally refers to styles that include natural materials, neutral expanses with pops of primary colors, and long, low lines are common in modern styles. So what’s the difference?
Well modern is a static term, whereas contemporary is a dynamic, changing term. In other words, contemporary designs and interiors are “of the day” and exist in the here-and-now. We say here-and-now because ten years ago some of the materials wouldn’t have been available and ten years from now, there will be new resources that do not exist today. In contemporary design, you are free to mix match furniture pieces from different eras.
Of course, these styles are just a snippet of the several designs and décor options out there. Just remember in the end, with a little creativity the combination of different styles can become your own unique style. That’s the beauty of it all….there are no rules!
