One or two sinks? It’s the classic debate for couples renovating a master bathroom. A second sink in the bathroom is like an extra pair of hands; you will always find a use for it. Despite the appeal and practicality of a double sink, there are other factors to consider when deciding between a sink or double sink. So let’s walk through this two-sided argument.

Personal space

It’s no secret formula – two sinks = more personal space. A double sink vanity is a convenient option for a working couple whose morning routine would be vastly improved without the daily “see who will get toothpaste spit onto their hands as their trying to wash up first.” Also, your own sink means you can keep your makeup, creams, hair products and shaving kits out as necessary without having your partner knock anything over. Because the reality of the situation is that people these days’ lead busy lives and need access to the bathroom at the same time. Each morning will seem much brighter and the adult relationship won’t be hampered by those sibling-like fights over a single faucet.

Design Flexibility

Customers can choose from prefabricated or customized two-sink vanities. Assembled double sinks are one of the easiest to install in a bathroom because of its fixed dimensions. In other words, all the groundwork is done for you as there’s no guessing if elbow clearance might be an issue. Custom vanities offer even more benefits, as they can be tailored to your exact wishes. Regardless of your decision, you can be sure of one thing – you and your partner will have to sift through infinite possibilities.

But the convenience of two sinks has its tradeoffs like….

Cost

The cost of installing and maintaining two sinks is obviously more than one. Tacking on the additional materials, fixtures and man labour required for an extra vanity results in higher costs.  Then there is the added cleaning and maintenance cost involved.

Space

A typical sink basin is about 17 to 19 inches wide. Usually a solid 6 feet or more is ideal for two sinks to work. These 6 feet will give the minimum 11-12 inch buffer required between units to avoid couples from crowding each other out and banging elbows. Even if you do have a good amount of space, two sinks will eat into precious counter space that could be used for your everyday toiletries and other displays. Also, one sink will provide more storage underneath since it won’t have to accommodate double drain pipes. Lastly, by installing only one sink, there may be the chance of having extra space for a separate tub/shower or storage cupboard.

Can you agree on the same style sink?

Because of the endless options for bathroom vanities, it may get tricky if you and your partner have different opinions and styles. Although there is no written rule indicating that both vanities must be matching, we can all agree in most situations that it looks best when they are similar as it conveys a harmonize setting in your bathroom.

In conclusion, if you can afford two sinks, have ample storage and counter space then these tradeoffs won’t pose any problems and it’s an easy decision!
