Laminate is constructed with a thin sheet of plastic resin fused to particle board or plywood. This material has been a kitchen mainstay for decades but not for its stylish reputation. However, with the latest designs, advancements in printing technology and edge options, laminate is able to mimic metal, stone, wood and other more expensive surfaces.

PROS

If you are on a tight budget, Laminate is a great choice as it is one of the most affordable countertops. Also price aside, another attractive feature of laminate is the sheer volume of colours, finishes and patterns available. Laminate surfaces are easy to maintain and they rank favorably on heat and stain resistant tests.

CONS

Laminate is prone to scratching from sharp utensils and although it is heat resistant, hot pans can damage the laminate. It is difficult to repair and for this reason, cutting boards and hot mats are highly recommended to preserve the countertop. Laminate can fade with direct UV light and therefore might not be an ideal material in a hot climate. Due to its construction only drop-in sinks can be used.
